| Overview about the Sino-German Program on Higher Education in Marine Sciences |
| The Sino-German Joint Master Program on Marine Sciences is based on a series of discussions among the Ministry of Education of the P.R. China (MoE) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany (BMBF), the Ocean University of China and the Universities of Bremen and Kiel as well as between the Center of Tropical Marine Ecology, Bremen, and the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences, Kiel at further intensifying the cooperation in the field of education and research. |
| The Sino-German Joint Master Program comprises the following marine-related disciplines at the three participating universities. Chinese master students can choose from six different subjects in Germany: Marine Biology, Aquatic Tropical Ecology, Marine Geosciences or Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen; Biological Oceanography and Climate Physics at the University of Kiel. At OUC, two main subjects are currently offered to graduate students admitted at one of the German universities: Marine Biology as well as Physical & Environmental Oceanography. |
| Until 2009 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) provide annual grants for 20 students from the German universities and 20 students from OUC. The students from Germany and China will spend one academic year at the respective partner country. They will have a Chinese and a German supervisor during their stay abroad according to the major subject. In addition, they have to accept the applicable regulations, especially those for examinations and do not have to pay tuition fees during their stay at Partner University. |
| Each university issues a certificate and a transcript of records after successful fulfilment of the particular 1-Year Study Programme. At the completion of the Master Study at the particular home university including the delivery of the Master Thesis a Master of Science Double Degree is awarded in Marine Sciences from the OUC and the particular programmes of the University of Bremen. The documents will be issued from both universities with reference to The Sino-German Joint Master Programme on Marine Sciences. |
| An accompanying measure to the Master Program is the organization of annual summer schools, during which current research topics are presented to Master’s and Ph.D. students in the form of lectures, practical tasks and excursions. These events are jointly implemented by German and Chinese Lecturers and held successfully since 2005. |
