The curiosity of mankind to explore marine mystery and the treasure of resource and energy sources from ocean attract great interests of scientists, especially ocean materials scientists. Ocean engineering materials with high qualities or properties build the solid foundation for advancing ocean science and technology. Ocean materials need to possess multi-functions in relatively complex and bad marine environments. For instance, ocean structural materials are expected with good mechanical properties, excellent corrosion resistance and little sensitivity on temperature, water current and so on. Meanwhile, materials with special structure can present multi-functional properties. For example, shape memory alloys can act as actuators as well as sensors, and the aim of composite materials is to exhibit each part's advantages and their synergistic effect. Multi-functional materials and structures are not only the basic tendency for the development of ocean materials, but also the inevitable result of the mankind's eagerness to explore new materials and structures. Namely, materials themselves can intrinsically possess multi-function related with their mechanical, thermal, electrical and others properties, and, mankind always takes the initiative to optimize or combine the advantages of all kinds of materials.
    The scope of this conference is mainly focused on multi-functional materials and structures for different engineering applications ranging from smart materials, composite, nanostructure and nano-technology to ocean engineering materials. The conference will last for 4 days. The purpose of the conference is to provide a channel for all participants/scholars to promote technical cooperation at an international level.
     All participants to this conference will definitely have an opportunity to communicate with the most outstanding materials scientists and get acquainted with the latest developments in the area of multi-functional materials and structures, and their applications for science and engineering. I am sure that besides the technical programs to be held in the conference; you will be able to share your happiness with your colleagues and families in the city of Qingdao, the East region of China.
