Background of IAMRI

In October 2004, at the 80th anniversary of the founding of Ocean University of China, Prof.GUAN Huashi, the President of OUC and also the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, met with Prof. Bernard Moulden,President of James Cooker University in Australia and Vice-president of Southampton University in the U.K. to discuss with them about the proposal to jointly establish the International Association of Marine-Related Institutions(IAMRI). Our OUC President was very keen on the idea of forming an international organization in marine science. Later on at the dinner with the Vice-president of University of West Brittany, OUC top leaders talked once again about the idea of setting up IAMRI. Pukyong National University of Korea and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology also expressed their enthusiasm for IAMRI. In the second half of November 2004 when the delegation from University of Kiel and University of Bremen paid a visit to OUC, this idea was discussed with the German counterparts, who also showed their strong interest in this initiative.

OUC has, in a formal administive meeting, approved the establishment of IAMRI. Prof. WANG Lin , Vice-president of OUC, and the International Office were responsible for the preparatory work of the IAMRI establishment.
