OUC has made great achievements in its scientific research by focusing its attention on the frontier of science and technology in the world, facilitating the work for national goals and key strategies, and meeting the demand of economic development and social progress. The achievements made by OUC are as follows:

• Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology to be established soon
• Seven key laboratories and three engineering research centers under the Ministry of Education housed at OUC, which cover all the sub-disciplines of marine sciences
• One of the four advantageous institutions to undertake major research projects in China
• Four major projects of the National Basic Research Program of China (“Project 973”), accounting for more than one third of all the marine-related projects in China.
• Ranking the first in resources and environmental research and the 10th among all the scientific and educational institutions involved in “Project 863” under the 11th Five Year General Plan in 2006.
• Over 30 percent of the prizes in Oceanography and Fisheries in China have been awarded to OUC.
• Almost all the scientific works and textbooks in marine sciences in China have been compiled by OUC faculty members.
• Among the total number of research papers published in such world famous Journal as “JPO” by researchers and scientists from the Chinese mainland, more than 50 percent of them were contributed by professors and researchers from OUC.
• During the period of the 10th Five Year Plan, OUC applied for 627 patents including 466 patents for invention and granted 177 patents including 100 utility patents, ranking the 12th and the 18th among all the colleges and universities across China in 2005.
• Great contributions made to the construction of a “Marine Shandong” by participating in the selection of the sites for Rizhao Port and Dongying Port as well as carrying out aquaculture.
• Two action plans for vitalizing Shangdong Province and Qingdao City based on marine research and exploration to facilitate the local and regional economic development.
