The Laboratory was founded in 1993. It carries out national science and technology programs and international cooperative projects. The Ph.D. degree programs in ocean remote sensing, ocean optics, ocean acoustics and marine geographical information system are offered. The Cheung Kong Scholars Program of Ministry of Education in Ocean Remote Sensing was set up in 1999 and the chair professors have been recruited.
